Being proud of History at The Avenue
Everyone at The Avenue both children and teachers are not only experiencing History within lessons, but throughout the whole school.
- Our History timeline allows the children to understand where their historical learning fits into chronology.
- Displays are used as a key talking point throughout teaching and for children to proudly display their work as well as communicate it with others.
- Know it boards are used for key History vocabulary.
- Curriculum big books promote a yearly overview of teaching for each year group including objectives, pictures, children’s work and children’s voice.
How do we approach History at The Avenue?
The Avenue Primary school aims to give children an awareness of the past and how it was different from the present. Children are provided with the opportunity to develop a real sense of chronology and equip them with the ability to explore some of the ways historians find out about the past.
The focus in our teaching is for children to know and understand history from the earliest of times to the present day. As children progress through school, they will know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world including the nature of ancient civilizations and empires and their characteristic features. Children will be taught to understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.
By the time children leave the Avenue, they will have an understanding of how their lives are affected by the events of the past; a knowledge of the sequence of key events; an understanding of historical concepts; an ability to question sources and accounts; as well as a thorough enjoyment of the subject.
Key Stage 1 Assessment Overview
Pupils should be taught about:
- Changes within living memory – where appropriate, these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national life
- Events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries]
- The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements, some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods.
- Significant historical events, people and places in their own locality

Key Stage 2 Assessment Overview
Pupils should be taught about:
- Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.
- The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain.
- Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots.
- The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.
- A local history study.
- A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066.
- The achievements of the earliest civilizations – an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and an in-depth study of one of the following: Ancient Sumer, The Indus Valley, Ancient Egypt, The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China
- Ancient Greece – a study of Greek life and achievements and their influence on the western world
- A non-European society that provides contrasts with British history
