We have chosen to teach French as our modern foreign language across The Avenue. Each year group has a set of objectives to cover using the Rigolo programme. This allows for progression from year group to year group across KS2.

The national curriculum outlines that by the end of KS2, pupils should:

How is French taught at The Avenue Primary School?

Key Stage 2

Children learn to speak French from Year 3 upwards. From September 2020 we have a specialist languages teacher who comes into school once a week to teach children across Key Stage 2. Learning a language is a fantastic way to expose our children’s curious minds to a culture outside of our country and that of our nearest European neighbours. Children are taught French through games, songs, oral and written work. The taught skills will be built upon as they move up through their primary education. We aim to build our children’s confidence at speaking an additional language and create intrigue to go on to learn others after their primary education.

Key Stage 1

Whilst MFL isn’t a requirement for KS1 pupils, there are some skills that can be practised orally with the children.
