Physical Education (PE) at The Avenue Primary School aims to develop a fun, high-quality PE curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and participate in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.
The Avenue Primary is an active member of the Middlesbrough Schools Sports Partnership. We believe in giving our children opportunities to compete against other schools within Middlesbrough. We liaise closely with external agencies to provide enrichment experiences for our children.
Our children have the opportunity to be coached by a national qualified gymnastic coach, during school time and as an after school activity. In recent years, our school has been national champions. We offer after school coaching for both KS1 and KS2 for a number of different sporting activities. We are affiliated with Yorkshire cricket club and take part annually in their chance to shine initiative. This enables us to deliver outside coaching from qualified cricket coaches working for Yorkshire Cricket Club.
The Avenue Primary compete regularly in a number of different sporting competitions. We have competed at cross country, tag rugby, indoor athletics, football, cricket, and basketball. We have seen how sport can raise self-esteem and support children in becoming effective team members.
We are constantly striving to improve the delivery of PE lessons within our school by giving the children opportunities to try different sports. Recent additions to our PE curriculum include curling equipment and the Olympic sport of handball. We have recently purchased a new PE scheme called Getset4PE. This provides a rich and varied PE curriculum and a consistency of approach. See attached for the long-term plan for each year group.
The profile of sport is raised further by our annual sports week. This includes a competitive sports day and a fun run which parents/guardians often attend in great numbers. During this week, we have further opportunities for children to take part in different events. We also aim for all of our children to reach the national standard of 25m for swimming, by using a variety of strokes, which include front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke, as well as performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
We believe PE can be a platform for promoting a healthy lifestyle, giving children the life skills to collaborate as well as resilience, humility and respect for one another.
We use our Sports Premium funding effectively. A full overview of our expenditure is on the website.
